From the north to the south of the city you will find beautiful beaches easily accessible from the city.

Essaouira’s beaches are generally clean. The city has been awarded the national label for environmental protection, based on the quality, cleanliness and safety of the beaches.

There are a number of well-known beaches around Essaouira, which we will describe in this article.

The city beach of Essaouira

The city beach is wide, with fine sand and a view over the bay. Here you can swim or do sports such as windsurfing and surfing. You can also take a ride on the camels or sail on a small tourist boat around the island of Mogador.

The beach of Essaouira

The Mogador islands or purple islands are home to an ornithological reserve where seagulls and eleonora falcons can be seen. In the 1st century, the Romans created a purple factory, a dye made from marine molluscs, which was very popular at the time. The ruins of a large prison dating from the late 19th century still remain on the site.

Diabat Beach or Tagharte Beach

To the south of the city of Essaouira, there is a unique beach. It is Diabat beach.

This beach is located at the mouth of the Oued Ksob, about 6 km from the bay of Essaouira.

It is a wide beach with the ruins of the Borj el Baroud, the remains of a defensive formation on the wave-beaten shore… Next to it, on a small hill, you will find the Diabat, a monument built in stone and mortar, about ten meters high. Near this beach is the village of Diabat, a famous local village.

In addition to its natural beauty, Diabat beach is also famous for its outdoor activities, including quad biking. Adventure and thrill seekers can rent quad bikes and explore the beach area. It is possible to embark on a guided tour through the sand dunes, passing through spectacular desert landscapes. This is an exciting experience that allows you to discover the area in a unique and fun way.

The road reaches the coast near Cap Rhir and continues along the coast to Agadir.

From there, short secondary roads (10 and 20 km) lead to a rugged coastline that is difficult to access. There are occasional low-lying, sandy areas that form beautiful windswept beaches with strong waves, ideal for surfing.

Cap Sim

If you take the road from Agadir, 8 km from the village of El Ghazoua, there is a fork in the road to the coast which takes you to Cap Sim and Sidi Kaouki. The beach of Essaouira is 20 km away on foot.

Cap Sim beach

Cap Sim, 14 km away, has a lighthouse surrounded by dunes, a beautiful place that transports you to the Sahara desert, with wide unspoilt beaches and a small coastal fishing village.

Sidi Kaouki

This is one of the beaches, if not the beach, not to be missed on your visit to Essaouira.

South of the cape and 25 km from Essaouira, this wide beach is beaten by strong winds and big waves, next to a Tuya forest. It is named after the mausoleum of this revered saint, who presides over the beach among the rocks, and is a popular pilgrimage in August.

This beach has been very popular with the people of Essaouira, Marrakech and the world in recent years. It is also the closest beach to Essaouira airport.

Sidi Kaouki beach

It is a good place for surfing, although due to the strong winds it is sometimes dangerous and you need to be an expert in this sport.

There is a Surf Beach Club with a good atmosphere where you can rent boards and everything you need for this sport on the beach of Sidi Kaouki.

Horse or camel rides along the beach are typical. The beach has a wide range of hotels and flats for rent.

Read our detailed article on the Sidi Kaouki region.

Akawcht and Sidi Mbarak beaches

Continuing south from Sidi Kaouki along a coastal road, you reach these unspoilt beaches, 30km from Essaouira, next to the village of Aghnajane, where you can find good fresh fish.

In the nearby mountains you can explore some waterfalls.

Azrou Beach

From Sidi Kaouki, 3 km away, and 28 km from Essaouira, in Sidi Ahmed, you will discover a virgin beach ideal for swimming.

Iftane Beach

Further south, 40km away, through a relatively difficult access, on mountain tracks reserved for all-terrain vehicles, is this long beach next to a small fishing village, dominated by mountains and protected by cliffs. An impressive landscape of mountain and sea to explore.

Tafedna Beach

From the road to Agadir, 40km from Essaouira, in the commune of Ida Ou Azza, a local road branches off towards the coast for 15km, a road surrounded by mountains covered in argan trees, which leads to the Berber fishing village of Tafelney, next to the cape of the same name.

The village is characterised by the colourful doors of the houses and the large Tafedna beach.
